On Sunday 21 April, Geraint Jones will be taking on the TCS London Marathon in support of Tenovus Cancer Care and everyone affected by cancer. We caught up with him ahead of the big day.
‘The TCS London Marathon is an iconic event, with a fantastic atmosphere and amazing support. I did my first marathon in London back in 2002 and I don’t think I’ve done a better race. That feeling when you cross the finish line is indescribable and it’s a great achievement to get around the 26.2-mile course. Two decades since my first marathon (and two stone on the stomach), and I’m looking forward to giving it my best shot again – this being my third attempt.
There are lots of really good causes to support, but I don’t think there’s a better organisation to raise money for than Wales’ biggest cancer charity – Tenovus Cancer Care. Given the amount of people impacted by cancer and the amazing work the charity does, it was a very easy choice. For 80 years, they have been there to offer support, information and advice to anyone affected by cancer.
Tenovus Cancer Care understands what it is to live with cancer and how it affects family and friends too. Every 30 minutes someone in Wales is diagnosed with cancer and Tenovus Cancer Care will support 10% of them through one or more of their various services. But they want to be there for many more. This is why I'm taking on the TCS London Marathon as part of Team Tenovus Cancer Care.
Thankfully training has gone very well. I’ve done several 18+ mile runs and practised getting used to taking energy gels during the run. I know the last 6 miles or so is going to be hard, but I know the incredible atmosphere and the fact that so many people have been generous with sponsorship will see me through those difficult miles. I don’t really have pre-race rituals (sorry to be boring!), but I’ll be keeping an eye out for my wife Karen around the course.’
If you would like to donate to Tenovus Cancer Care, you can do so on Geraint’s fundraising page or via our donate page.
