Our 75th Birthday

Hi,

As you may know, 2018 marks our 75th Birthday. For 75 years, Tenovus Cancer Care has been at the heart of the community and our research and support continue to change lives today.

Each year over 19,000 people receive a cancer diagnosis in Wales, with over 360,000 people a year being diagnosed across the UK as a whole. Sadly 1 in every 2 of us will be affected by cancer in our lifetime and with the UK’s survival rate beyond five years below average when compared to other European countries, there is so much to do.

That’s why as Wales’ leading cancer charity, it’s important for us to continue providing life-saving treatment and support, as well as fund vital research to make sure more people live with and beyond cancer.

With more people depending on the NHS, we have to work harder to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer where we can. Cancer services account for a significant proportion of the NHS budget in Wales and with high cost treatments and the need for the most cutting edge therapies, we know we have a challenge on our hands to achieve a world where no one dies of cancer.

So for our 75th Birthday, we are focusing on the future.

At Tenovus Cancer Care we want to give cancer patients and their loved ones the future they deserve.

In our 75th Birthday year, we’ll be expanding ground-breaking services with the arrival of our third Mobile Support Unit that will be over 60% bigger than our existing Units. Once launched, it will be the largest mobile chemotherapy unit in the world, meaning we can deliver chemotherapy and other treatments to even more people closer to their home.

This is a huge step forward for us in shaping the future of cancer treatment, and improving the lives of thousands of patients for many years to come.

We know that having a cancer diagnosis not only affects someone physically, but emotionally too. That’s why in our 75th year, we are launching our ACTivate Your Life – Affected By Cancer course. It’s designed to help people understand how to respond to negative thoughts and feelings, and how take more power over their actions.

This course will initially begin here in Wales, but we are aiming to roll this out to deliver it to large groups of people at a time, so that we can support even more people affected by cancer.

We will also continue to fund cutting-edge research, both in the laboratory and the community, that improves the lives of people affected by cancer. Over the years, it has been this combination of cancer support services and research that mean we’ve been there for cancer patients and their loved ones 365 days a year.

And it all began in the community.

Who would have thought that in 1943, a pair of headsets would start it all? 10 volunteers who gave a small gift in gratitude to a friend in need grew a charity from friendship, kindness and a shared passion for supporting their community.

Our 75 year history is full of achievements and milestones. From helping to develop the lifesaving Tamoxifen, the mostly widely used breast cancer drug in the world, to launching a nurse-led Support Line in 1992 that helps people 365 days a year. Our support services are there not just for cancer patients, but also their loved ones and last year we helped over 9,000 people.

Throughout our 75 years, we’ve grown and evolved, but some things remain constant and that is we continue to care for people affected by cancer when and where they need it the most.

We listen to the voices of the community.

It’s the people we’ve supported and the people who have supported us that are at the heart of what we do. Tenovus Cancer Care raises awareness of the issues and experiences people face when diagnosed with cancer so we can help others going through the same thing, and it’s only with the stories of real people can we do this.

That’s why in our 75th year, the story of Tenovus Cancer Care will be told through the words of people in our community.

We will be featuring 75 stories from the people we support and the amazing people who support us. Through these stories from the community, we hope to not only remember our past, but to show the difference we make and inspire you to join us as we support even more cancer patients and their loved ones.

We want you to be a part of this future.

Every hour that you support us is invaluable to the work we do to care for cancer patients and their loved ones. Without the fantastic commitment, support and generosity of people like you, we would not be able to do what we do and in our 75th year, we’ve made sure there are lots of exciting ways that you can get involved.

This year we’re aiming to raise over £75,000 through our Big Birthday Raffle, where a lucky Tenovus Cancer Care supporter will win a brand new MG3 Sport car! What an amazing way to not only raise vital funds to help us continue supporting cancer patients and their loved ones.

We will also be celebrating in style with our 75th Birthday Party Ball  at the fabulous Celtic Manor Resort. The evening will be a great start to what will be a really unforgettable year, hosted by our Patron Rob Brydon who will entertain our guests while they enjoy a delicious three course meal and of course, some wonderful singing from our Cwmbran choir.

In the true spirit of feeling 75 years young, we’re also setting ourselves a lot of challenges this year that you will be able to get involved with. From a world record breaking Zumbathon attempt for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, to holding your own community birthday parties, we have so many ways that you are able to celebrate with us in our 75th year.

All that is left to say is that we are so incredibly proud of everything we have accomplished over the past 75 years and I hope you will join us in celebrating our Birthday.

By doing so, you too will be helping to give cancer patients and their loved ones the future they deserve, as we work towards a world where no one dies of cancer.
