Our Longest-Running Charity Shop Celebrates 30 Years in Cardiff
Our longest-running charity shop located on Whitchurch Road, Cardiff has celebrated its 30th birthday with past and present volunteers and staff. The Whitchurch Road shop is one of our 64 local shops and is the first to reach the milestone.
The shop has been a constant feature on Whitchurch Road since opening in December 1987 and has raised thousands of pounds to support cancer patients and their loved ones.
One of our longest serving volunteers, Karin Morris, started volunteering at the shop when it first opened. Karin was part of the original team who arranged pop up shops and fundraising activities before our local shops existed.
Karin said, “I started volunteering with Tenovus Cancer Care after my neighbours June and John Burke, relatives of one of the original 10 founders of the charity, encouraged me to get involved. When the shop opened, I signed up with June as a volunteer. Over the 30 years we’ve been very lucky to have loyal donors and regular customers who treat us like friends.”
In 2016 Karin and June were named in the New Year’s Honours List and awarded a British Empire Medal for their services and support to us. June Burke, whose father was one of the 10 founding members of Tenovus Cancer Care, herself volunteered with the charity for more than 60 years, during which she helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Charlotte Hazell, manager of the Whitchurch Road shop, said: “For a shop to be open and trading 30 years is an incredible achievement, one which we certainly could not have reached if it wasn’t for our volunteers. We’ve got a really good team here who all support each other and I tell people that they’re my second family!”
We're looking for volunteers! Whether you’re interested in fundraising, making the shop windows really stand out or even collecting stock from supporters, there’s something for everyone. Find out more about volunteering with us.
