Today’s cancer waiting times reveal a desperate picture for the whole of 2022 in Wales.
Last year was the worst on record, with more people than ever waiting over 62 days from the first point of suspicion to starting their treatment.
To put it in context; back in 2020 when Covid-19 had its biggest impact, 5,684 people had to wait longer than 62 days. This rises to 7,031 people in 2021. And by 2022, it reached an all-time high of 8,829. This is huge failure.
Even before the recent strikes were taken into consideration, the annual number of people having to wait to start their cancer treatment in Wales was higher than 2020 and 2021. And the partial recovery, which typically takes place during summer months when the NHS is under less pressure, wasn’t seen last year either.
This disastrous trend cannot continue as every year more and more people with cancer are living in fear and uncertainty while they wait for diagnosis and treatment. The consequences of long wait times on survival chances and treatment options will be catastrophic.
While we know the health service is under great strain, it’s time to stop blaming factors like the pandemic or strikes. Cancer services need urgent attention.

Mae amseroedd aros canser heddiw yn datgelu darlun enbyd ar gyfer 2022 gyfan yng Nghymru.
Y llynedd oedd y gwaethaf ar gofnod, gyda mwy o bobl nag erioed yn aros dros 62 diwrnod o'r pwynt cyntaf o amheuaeth i ddechrau eu triniaeth.
I'w roi yn ei gyd-destun; yn ôl yn 2020 pan gafodd Covid-19 ei effaith fwyaf, bu’n rhaid i 5,684 o bobl aros yn hwy na 62 diwrnod. Mae hyn yn codi i 7,031 o bobl yn 2021. Ac erbyn 2022, cyrhaeddodd y lefel uchaf erioed o 8,829. Mae hyn yn fethiant enfawr.
Hyd yn oed cyn i’r streiciau diweddar gael eu hystyried, roedd nifer blynyddol y bobl y bu’n rhaid iddynt aros i ddechrau eu triniaeth canser yng Nghymru yn uwch na 2020 a 2021. Ac mae’r adferiad rhannol, sydd fel arfer yn digwydd yn ystod misoedd yr haf pan fo’r GIG dan lai o bwysau, ni welwyd y llynedd ychwaith.
Ni all y duedd drychinebus hon barhau oherwydd bob blwyddyn mae mwy a mwy o bobl â chanser yn byw mewn ofn ac ansicrwydd wrth iddynt aros am ddiagnosis a thriniaeth. Bydd canlyniadau amseroedd aros hir ar gyfleoedd goroesi ac opsiynau triniaeth yn drychinebus.
Er ein bod yn gwybod bod y gwasanaeth iechyd dan straen mawr, mae'n bryd rhoi'r gorau i feio ffactorau fel y pandemig neu'r streiciau. Mae angen sylw brys ar wasanaethau canser.
Byddwn yn parhau i ddod â llais pobl y mae canser yn effeithio arnynt drwy ein Cymuned Ganser Cymru Gyfan i ysgogi’r newidiadau sydd eu hangen i wneud gwahaniaeth gwirioneddol. Mae ein hystod gyfannol o wasanaethau sy’n canolbwyntio ar yr unigolyn yma i’w cefnogi yn ystod y cyfnod anodd hwn.
