Tenovus Cancer Care Chief Executive to Step Down

Judi Rhys MBE announces decision to step down as chief executive of Tenovus Cancer Care.

After more than five years in the role, Judi Rhys MBE plans to leave the Wales-based cancer charity at the end of the year. Appointed in 2019, Judi joined following a distinguished career in the third sector including holding chief executive positions at Arthritis Care, British Liver Trust and Cancer Research Wales. She was awarded an MBE in 2021 for her work in the voluntary sector.

During her time at Tenovus Cancer Care, Judi has tirelessly campaigned to tackle inequalities and improve outcomes for everyone affected by cancer across Wales. Priorities have involved raising awareness of the six less survivable cancers, including leading a Welsh taskforce and being at the vanguard of the introduction of lung health checks in Wales.

Recently, Judi gave evidence to a Senedd committee inquiry into gynaecological cancers and the charity played a key role in bringing the voices of women to the forefront of the debate.

She steered Tenovus Cancer Care through the pandemic, introducing a transformative strategy which has seen the charity’s income return to its pre-pandemic level. A new counselling service and first-of-its-kind All-Wales Cancer Community was also launched during her tenure.

Judi said: “It’s been an absolute privilege to lead Tenovus Cancer Care through extraordinary times. The

opportunity to work alongside people affected by cancer and witness the dedication and generosity of our volunteers and supporters has been truly amazing and inspiring.

“I’m immensely proud of everything we’ve achieved together and the difference we’re making to the lives of so many people affected by cancer.

“Sadly, there remains a huge amount of work to do to improve outcomes across Wales. But I’m confident a new leader can build on our strong foundations and continue to drive our mission forward.”

Tracey Burke, chair of Tenovus Cancer Care’s board of trustees, said: “On behalf of everyone at Tenovus Cancer Care and the wider sector, I would like to extend our gratitude for the outstanding contribution Judi has made.

“Not only has Judi ensured our services have been there when people needed them most, she’s also been an inspirational leader in the sector, bringing together key partners to tackle the issues most affecting people living with cancer in Wales. She will leave an undeniable mark on the cancer landscape in Wales and can proudly pass on the reins with the charity in its strongest position for some time.”

Judi is expected to stay on until her successor joins. The recruitment process is due to begin in August. If you would like to express your interest in the role, please contact people@tenovuscancercare.org.uk
